Security Cameras for Front Entrances

The front door is where visitors, deliveries and the occasional stranger all arrive. We set up a camera view that shows faces clearly and alerts you to people, not leaves.

Who is at the door?

You hear the knock while you are in the shower, or the courier leaves a card while you are at work. Maybe someone tried the screen door handle. Maybe you want to know the kids got home. This is where you most need a clear face and a clear time stamp.

Camera placement that works

Many front-door cameras are fitted too high, too far back or pointed into the sun. We look at your actual doorway first.

  • Height. Roughly above head height but not so high that you only capture the top of a hat. We aim for angles that show faces as people approach.
  • Distance. Far enough to see the whole porch and the step, close enough that someone at the door fills the frame.
  • Backlight. A bright street behind a visitor turns them into a silhouette. We choose a position or camera that handles this better, and ask you how the sun moves across the porch.

A second camera along the path or verandah shows people coming and going. See houses for the full layout.

If you want a video intercom, Dahua offers these as part of its product range. We can discuss whether one suits your home at the site assessment.

What AI detection does here

At a front door you want to know about people. On compatible systems, human detection helps your phone alert for a person rather than a swaying plant or a moth by the porch light.

An intrusion zone can be drawn over the porch, so you are notified if a person steps into it at night. A tripwire across the path can show who has come up from the street.

These features depend on the camera and recorder, and AI features vary. Entry-level systems may offer basic motion detection only. The system detects and flags. It does not stop anyone, and it does not replace a locked door.

DMSS at the door

The best part of a front-door camera is the quick check. An alert arrives, you open DMSS, and live view shows the porch. On supported equipment, video intercom communication is possible through the app. Playback lets you see when the parcel was dropped, or who rang while you were out.

Access can be shared with family members. Remote access is set up securely through DMSS and sensible network configuration.

Plan for these things

Lighting. A porch light that stays on or comes on with movement gives clearer footage than a dark doorway. If you plan to rely on night footage, tell us about the existing lights.

Network. A cabled connection to the recorder is more dependable than wifi. If the door is far from where the router sits, we plan the run, or discuss alternatives.

Storage. Recording on events can stretch storage. Continuous recording is more complete but needs more space. We size the drive for the days you want to keep.

Privacy and signage. Point the camera at your own entry, not at the neighbour's door or the street beyond what is needed. Audio recording is treated more strictly than video, so ask us before enabling it. Rules differ by state and territory. This is general information, not legal advice, so check your own state's rules.

Entry-level versus higher-end. An entry-level camera provides recorded video and basic motion alerts. Higher-end models add sharper detail, better handling of bright backgrounds and more refined AI detection.

Frequently asked questions

Can I talk to a visitor from my phone?

On compatible systems with video intercom equipment, DMSS can support two-way communication. This depends on the equipment, so ask us.

Will it show faces at night?

It depends on the camera, the light and the distance. Good lighting near the door helps more than most people expect.

Is a video doorbell enough?

For some units and small homes, it may be. For a house with several approaches, a recorder-based system usually gives more coverage and local recording.

Can I get alerts only for people?

On compatible systems, yes. Human detection can be set up as the trigger for a notification. Basic systems may only offer motion alerts.
