What worries people about their house
Most owners tell us the same few things. A parcel sits on the porch while you are at work. A side gate is open and you cannot tell who opened it. A neighbour mentions someone walking along the fence at night. Or your old camera buzzes every time a branch moves, so you stopped looking.
A house is hard to cover because it is not one doorway. It is a front door, a garage, a side path, a back door and a yard. A good system is planned around how people really approach your home.
Where we put cameras, and why
We start with a site assessment. We walk the property, look at the street, the fences and the lighting, and ask how your household moves around. Then we suggest positions like these.
- Front door and porch. Close enough to see faces and parcels, high enough to be out of easy reach.
- Driveway and street side. Wider view to see cars arriving and people walking up.
- Side access. The narrow path beside the house is where many unwelcome visitors go unseen.
- Back door and yard. Covers the sliding door, the clothesline and any sheds.
We confirm the number of cameras when we quote, after we understand the layout. Our pages on front entrances and backyards and gates go deeper on single areas.
What AI detection does for a house
Basic motion alerts fire for wind, rain, spiders and headlights. On compatible systems, AI detection works differently. Human detection looks for a person in the picture, which can cut alerts caused by trees, shadows and animals. Vehicle detection can flag cars on your driveway.
Two other tools suit houses well:
- Intrusion zones. Draw a virtual zone across the side path and ask to be told if a person enters it overnight.
- Tripwire. A virtual line across the driveway entrance flags a person or vehicle crossing it.
These features depend on the selected camera and recorder, and AI features vary. Entry-level systems may offer basic motion detection only. We tell you which you are getting before you decide.
The system detects and alerts you. It does not guarantee an outcome. You still decide what to do next.
How DMSS fits
We set up the DMSS app on your phone and, if you like, on your partner's phone and a tablet. You can open live view from anywhere, jump to an alert, and play back the recording around it. DMSS can share access with family members, so everyone sees what they need. Remote access is set up securely through DMSS and sensible network configuration.
Plan for these things
Lighting. Cameras see better with a little light. A sensor light near the side gate often helps more than a more expensive camera.
Network. Most cameras are cabled to the recorder, which is steadier than wifi. We run the cabling and set up your home network connection for remote viewing.
Storage. The NVR records to a surveillance hard drive. Capacity is sized around camera count, recording quality and how many days you want to keep.
Privacy and signage. Point cameras at your own property, not your neighbour's windows or yard, and keep them out of bathrooms and bedrooms where guests sleep. Audio recording is treated more strictly than video. State and territory rules differ. This is general information, not legal advice, so check your own state's rules.
Entry-level versus higher-end. Entry-level setups usually give you reliable recording and basic motion alerts. Higher-end cameras and recorders add more detailed AI detection, better night images and more advanced search. We match the equipment to your budget and risk.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need cameras on every side of my house?
Not always. We cover the entry points and approaches first, then add cameras where the layout leaves blind spots.
Will the cameras alert me every time a cat walks past?
On compatible systems, human detection can reduce alerts from animals and moving plants. Results depend on the camera, the recorder and how the scene is set up.
Can my family view the cameras too?
Yes. DMSS can share a device with family members, so each person can use their own phone.
Can I add cameras later?
Usually, yes. Depending on your recorder's capacity, we can add cameras and change settings as part of ongoing support.
