Vehicle detection for driveways, car parks and yards

Cars arrive, trucks leave, and a camera that only sees movement cannot tell you which was which. On compatible Dahua systems, vehicle detection turns that activity into alerts and events you can search.

Someone parked in your spot, and you have no idea when

A ute sits across your driveway. A van idles outside the warehouse at 9pm. A car you do not recognise is in the staff car park on a Sunday. You want to know when it arrived, and you do not want to scrub through a day of footage to find out.

Vehicles are a different kind of problem from people. They are larger, they move faster, and they come and go constantly. A system that treats every pixel change as an alert will bury you. A system that understands "that is a vehicle" can do something more useful.

How it works, in plain words

On compatible systems, Dahua AI can identify vehicles in the camera image and create alerts or searchable events based on vehicle activity.

Two things follow from that.

  1. Alerts. You can ask to be told when a vehicle appears in an area you care about, such as a driveway or a yard entrance.
  2. Searchable events. The system records that a vehicle was there, so afterwards you can look for vehicle events instead of watching the whole recording. This links closely with intelligent video search.

What you see day to day

  • A phone notification when a vehicle is detected in a zone and time window you selected.
  • A short clip in the DMSS app so you can see what it was without leaving what you are doing. Our page on the DMSS mobile app explains how that works.
  • Events you can review later, such as which vehicles came through the gate after hours.

We set up the areas, the schedules and the notifications with you. A homeowner may want to know about vehicles at the end of the driveway overnight. A business may care only about vehicles in the yard outside trading hours. Those are different setups, and we build each one around you.

Where it suits best

  • Driveways and garages, where you want to know when something pulls in or lingers.
  • Warehouses and yards, where deliveries and after-hours vehicles both matter.
  • Car parks at offices and body corporate and common areas.
  • Construction sites, where vehicle movement at odd hours is worth noticing.

If you want to know exactly when a vehicle passes a particular point, such as a gate, a tripwire or line crossing rule is often the better fit. It watches a virtual line rather than a whole area.

What to know

Compatible systems only. Not every camera and recorder combination supports vehicle detection. AI features vary depending on the selected camera and recorder, and entry-level systems may offer basic motion detection only. We confirm what your system can do before you commit.

Detection is not recognition. This page is about identifying that a vehicle is present and creating events from it. We are not promising that every system will read number plates, identify makes and models, or do anything beyond what the selected equipment supports. If you need something specific, say so early and we will tell you honestly whether it is achievable.

Camera position decides a lot. Vehicles far from the lens or hidden behind a fence are harder for any camera. We plan positions during the site assessment, and night performance depends on lighting and camera choice.

It flags, you decide. A vehicle alert does not know whether that is your neighbour, your courier or a stranger. It is a prompt to look.

Not a guarantee. We do not promise it will catch every vehicle or prevent any incident. It is a way to see and find vehicle activity more easily.

Privacy. Cameras that cover a driveway can also see the street or a neighbour's property. Surveillance and privacy rules differ by state and territory. This is general information, not legal advice, so check your own state's rules, and we are happy to talk through sensible camera angles and signage.

From first call to working system

We assess the site, choose compatible cameras, run the cabling, configure detection and set up DMSS on your phone. See how the whole process works, or call 1300 263 551 to ask for a quote.

Frequently asked questions

Can vehicle detection alert me when a car enters my driveway?

On compatible systems, yes, it can create an alert based on vehicle activity in the area you choose. We set up the area and times with you.

Does it work at night?

It can, but results depend on the camera, the lighting and the position. We discuss night performance when we plan the system.

Is vehicle detection the same as number plate recognition?

No. Vehicle detection identifies that a vehicle is present. Anything beyond that depends on the specific equipment, so ask us before you buy.

Can I search for past vehicle events?

On compatible Dahua AI systems, vehicle events can make recorded footage easier to search. How advanced the search is depends on the equipment.

Let's talk

Ready for cameras that know what they are looking at?

Tell us about your property and what worries you. We will recommend a system that fits, explain which AI features your cameras can support, and quote clearly.
