People, not noise

Human detection that tells people from passing movement

Basic motion alerts go off for leaves, rain and the neighbour's cat. Human detection on compatible Dahua systems focuses on people, so the alerts you do get are worth opening.

The alert you stopped trusting

You installed a camera. At first, every notification got your attention. Soon you swiped them away. A branch moved. A shadow crossed the lawn. Rain hit the lens.

That is the problem with basic motion detection. It reacts to any change in the picture, and a lot of things change in a picture outdoors. When every alert is noise, the one that matters gets ignored.

Human detection is designed to fix exactly that.

How it works, in plain words

Motion detection asks, "Did pixels change?" Human detection asks, "Is that a person?"

On compatible Dahua systems, the camera or the recorder analyses the video and looks for the shape and movement of a human being. When it finds one, it flags the event as a person. When it sees something else, it can leave it alone.

Because it is looking for people specifically, it can reduce alerts caused by:

  • trees and shrubs moving in the wind
  • rain and falling debris
  • shifting shadows and changing light
  • animals
  • general environmental movement

We say "can reduce", not "removes". No analytics is perfect, and a very distant or partly hidden person may not be flagged. What you should notice is a clear drop in the pointless alerts.

What you get day to day

Once we have set it up, here is how it tends to look in practice.

  • Fewer, better notifications. Your phone alerts you when a person is detected in the areas you chose, rather than every time something moves.
  • Event labels you can scan. In DMSS, the Dahua mobile app, you can open an alert and see the clip with the reason it was flagged.
  • A faster review. Later, you can go straight to the person events. We configure DMSS for you and show you how to use it.

Where it suits best

Human detection earns its keep where there is plenty of harmless movement and you only care about people.

  • Front yards and backyards with trees, hedges or pets. See our notes on backyards and gates.
  • Front entrances, where you want to know about visitors but not passing leaves.
  • Warehouses, yards and commercial properties after hours, when any person on site is worth a look.

It pairs well with other detection tools. Combine it with intrusion detection and you can ask for a person alert only inside a zone you have drawn, only at the times you choose.

What to know

We would rather you hear the limits from us than discover them later.

It needs compatible equipment. Human detection is not built into every camera and recorder. It depends on the selected camera and recorder, and AI features vary between models. Entry-level systems may offer basic motion detection only. When we quote, we tell you which cameras and recorder carry human detection, so you know what you are paying for.

Placement matters. A camera that sees people at a sensible angle and distance will do better than one pointed at a distant fence line. Part of our site assessment is choosing positions where people are clear enough for the analytics to work with. Our installation process covers how we do this.

It detects, it does not decide. A person alert tells you someone was seen. It cannot tell you whether that person is a delivery driver, a tradie you hired or someone who should not be there. You still look at the footage and make the call.

It is not a guarantee. It helps you notice and review what matters. It does not catch everything.

Setting it up properly

Switching it on is the easy bit. Good results take tuning: where the camera points, which areas it watches, how sensitive it is and which phones get alerts. We do that during installation, and our support team can adjust it later.

Frequently asked questions

Does every Dahua camera have human detection?

No. It is available on compatible systems, depending on the selected camera and recorder. We choose equipment that suits what you want to detect and tell you what each part can do.

Will I still get false alerts?

You may still get an occasional one. Human detection can reduce alerts from trees, rain, shadows and animals, but it is not perfect, and we tune the settings after installation to improve results.

Can it identify who the person is?

This page covers detecting that a person is present, not identifying them. You review the footage and decide who it is.

Do I need the internet for it to work?

The detection itself runs on your camera or recorder. You need an internet connection to receive notifications and view footage on your phone when you are away.
